Think about this, if you visit Best Buy to purchase a flat screen television and you have a question do you feel more comfortable talking to the guy that just started yesterday and seems unsure when you ask a question?  Or, do you prefer the guy that confidently answers your question and positions himself as an expert in his field?  Of course, most people are going to pick the expert.  Those same people are going to pick the expert when they consider joining you in your opportunity as well.  If you position yourself as an expert, then people are going to feel very comfortable joining you in your latest venture.

Anyway, back to my friend’s business card.  There 2 things on the card that said amateur and here are two tips you can use to brand yourself and  avoid the same mistakes:

• Use of company replicated websites - The website on her card was the company’s website slash her rep id.   I don’t advocate the use of company replicated websites, the search engines don’t like them.  It is better to have your own domain and website that is either a capture page or a blog that then points to the company site.  Blogs are really easy to setup.  I happen to like WordPress, but I hear Typepad is good too. (for a discussion that I found about one over the other, click here)  However, if you have to use the company’s site you should at least redirect the domain name to your company’s replicated website.
• Use of free e-mail accounts – My friends e-mail account was either at  Yahoo or Hotmail, I don’t remember.  Which sounds more professional to you, the free account or xxxxxx@your-domain.com.  Nothing sounds more like you are in this thing fo the long haul than having your ow domain name.  You can get one for under $10 over at Go Daddy.  You can then set up your e-mail and re-direct in one fell swoop.

1. Register a domain name .  There are many domain registers, but a lot of people like Go Daddy. The big question for most people is, how do you pick a domain name? One method that I like with Go Daddy is to first do a massive brainstorming session and  put all the possible names into Notepad. Then use Go Daddy’s bulk register feature to see what is available.  Be sure to setup your e-mail for your the new domain you just purchased.  It is a lot more professional to use an e-mail address that says yourname@your-domain.com than one from Yahoo or Gmail.  That helps establish your branding, something that we can cover later.
2. Start doing some reading.  There is a ton of information out there and you will never get it all.  However, one of the best resources that you can start with is free.  If you have not yet done so, pick up your free copy of Anne Sieg’s “7 Great Lies of Network Marketing“.
3. Get around some good people.  If this is not your first foray into the world of network marketing you know that back in the old days if you did not get your infomation from your upline or the company, it was rejected.  People were kept pretty insulated from the outside world as far as marketing goes.  Well this is truly now the information age.  People from other companies are sharing information on what works best.  One of the best places I have found to get this is a site called Better Networker.  Go over there and join the forums.
4. Get on Facebook.  Did you know that the fastest growing demographic for Facebook is 35-54 year olds?  Right, behind them are the 55+ year olds.  I don’t care whether you are old or young, Facebook has become a prime meeting spot and it is essential to be a part of it if you want to develop an online prescence.  Once you join, start joining some of the groups on there related to network marketing.  You will find them when you do a “Group” search.
5.
